Nicely done! After watching your review, I am sold on getting one as well. I am finding the Sports Touring model is hard to come by here in the Kansas City area.
One issue I've had with mine and that I've seen on many other 2nd gen refreshed Ridelines is the misaligned front bumper. The gap between the bumper and the front side panel is very uneven. It appears the bumper is sagging, even from new.
Needs to be affordable if it is to be called an MR2.
Hopefully they sort out the Taco and 4Runner driver side lean.
No replacement for displacement
I still want to take the car to a touchless car wash in the winter though.
Great car, but they could improve the wiggly roof and tweeters from the bose speakers, not very premium. Hope their batteries last too.
Masters compete with each other,nice!
GIVE ME A TRUE HATCH GR86
tacoma looks like a cheap truck compare to the gmc, id probably go with the gmc, and its cheaper
If you look at a picture of Hulk Hogan you’ll understand how Toyota comes up with all its front end designs.
Wow! Excellent interview with the Toyota Engineer!
I can see putting that turbo 4 in the RX and Highlander. They don't need more power. But gutting the 4Runner like this is a mistake that Toyota will have to fix.

Curious about your explanation at 49:00 of the turbo “continuing to spin” and the lubricant “continuing to run” after shutdown. I understand an electric pump circulating coolant after shutdown, but lubricant? Does the lube (oil) not stop when the engine oil pump stops? Also, is the turbo not spun by engine exhaust gas alone? How would it spin on after shutdown (beyond momentarily winding down from inertia)?
Sad

Great interview
People are posting fuel economy numbers in these turbo 4 cylinders. The fuel economy are rhe same as the V6 . It's just BS
I believe that Toyota went with 4 cylinder turbos for EPA emissions and not so much for increased fuel economy.
We've had four 4Runners. The first three each gave us over 350k miles worth of running life before we traded. This last one, a 2000 LTD, blew the #3 spark plug right out of the head, but that was at 328k miles. Say what you will, Toyota makes a quality product. Does that mean I want a Turbo? Hell no. I'll stick with my NA engine thank you. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. NA works just fine.
Great interview.
Is the gear box in the back?
I went 8200 on my cruze, oil was still golden brown and clean.
I owed this car for 3 years It’s a terrible drive
Acura 2005 MDX Base over 300000 miles still running.
Good interview David! All, please buy those cars now and I will buy one of 4Runners in 10 or 15 years probably, when reviewers start to call current TNGA platform “outdated” and “ancient”.
We have 3 Toyota's and I would never buy anything else! Great channel ALL the time.
Great interview
So miffed at the $15,000 price increase of the PRO model compared to my 2020. Easily $5,000-7,000 over priced….Especially compared to a Ranger Raptor $57,000 with front locker and FULL time AWD and a twin turbo V6.
Turbo's and Hybrids have been part of Toyota's product line for decades. We have owned 3 hybrid vehicles starting with a 2009. Our first went 14 years and 178K miles and the hybrid system was still working fine. Our second has over 110K and 12 years still going strong. Have a Rav4 hybrid only a year so far, has traveled all over the country and is awesome. 8000K miles so far...looking forward to selling our 5th gen 2014 4Runner for a 2025 it is good, and has 155K miles. Just kinda tired of 15MPG the hunting and lurching 5-speed and lack of modern tech. If I get 12-14 good years out of another car I'm ok with that.
Not interested in a turbo 4 cylinder 4wd truck. Period Toyota messed up big time by not listening to what their customers want. You can tell from this video they are in a panic trying to do damage control and hype up the 4 cylinder. Boo Toyota for ignoring your customers and trying to force this.
I think the main comparison should be 2024 gas powered cars vs 2026 hybrid. Everything else is superficial.
Rare instance where the previous generation looks better.
Will you pay 70k for the TRD Pro? This is insane.
I've never seen or heard a Julia go 0 to 60 in 3 seconds. And mention it with a Porsche 911 in a same sentence, it's just ridiculous.
Regarding turbo long term durability: What else do you expect him to say???? If he even slightly intimates that turbos aren't as reliable, he's FIRED!
Keep the cost down 😂 no engine cover! The old V6 always have a engine cover
10,000 mile oil changes are nuts. I don’t care what Sheldon says. Use a quality synthetic oil and change it every 5,000 miles on the dot. Maybe even every 4,000 miles if you do a lot of city driving.
Right ! If you keep a car 5 years or less that’s ok. But like me 10+ years, 5000 miles of synthetic oil is the most. Turbos burn that oil much faster.
I sure hope the engines are better in these than the new Tundra's. Just do a search on all the problems. I have serious buyer remorse; my local dealer wants to give me $17,000 less than I bought it for trading in a new 4Runner, the last year of a good Toyota. My TRD Offroad 2023 XP Package Army Green Tundra has 5000 miles on it, a bunch of engines are failing between 20,000 and 40,000 miles from bad main bearings and cams, I'm not having much help or hope from corporate Toyota either. The problems are not overblown, they even have differential problems and now rear main seal leaks. Sad state of affairs. These dealers are in for a rude awakening, which is why the manufactures are looking to sell direct. But the manufactures have proven greedy in way of subscriptions and useless options and packages. I may just go with another reliable 3rd Gen, these new vehicles are overteched and intrusive anyways, and reliability and quality control is a thing of the past, even for Toyota
I don't have a problem with all the new tech. I do however have a problem with not having the choice to get a naturally aspirated V6 or V8. Their is obviously still a market for both so it only makes sense to cater to as many people as possible. Just another example of the goverment and manufacturers forcing things down our throat. Definitely will be keeping my 2021 4 runner for the next 15-20 years. Only time will tell... I'm not convinced
You say you don’t have a problem with new technology, but you clearly do. Don’t lie to yourself! You do you bro.
@@brucemoose2 What does wanting to have a choice have to do with new technology? So you like things forced on you? What am I missing here?

Ideal for the school run and going to Tesco. Perhaps it could have been a tad bigger.
Great information! Thank you I like seeing this before I make a big investment in a vehicle .
Long term durability for turbo charged engines means 3k oil changes. Whoever sticks to 5-10k oil changes will pay the price. There are some dealers doing 10k oil changes on Toyota which as we all know is wearing out engines out sooner
Just drive nude!😂
I come from Guatemala and the trucks they send there are way better than here. Here in US they try to charge you for everything! My favorite trucknis the ISUZU D-MAX! The best truck ever! I own a Isuzu Rodeo for 23yrs and didn't give me any problems! Hope they come back to the US.
This guy is full of BS, There is NWIH Mexico can build the same quality product as Japan. This is not a slight on the Mexican worker at all, no other country could compete with the Japanese culture and work ethic. I'm going with the 4Runner over the Tacoma for that reason. Good luck with your south of the border trucks, but for me no thanks.
Sorry to burst your bubble 😢 but the interior is very bad design and cheap material! Just engine may be good, but if is only cylinder and turbo is not going to work if they go under water. I decided to go w the Nissan Frontier pro4X due to that specifications! specifications and I will specifications!
As a general rule, ALWAYS follow the severe duty schedule for your car maintenance
100%. Regular schedule is for lower cost to own and CAFE hurdles the manufacturers are trying to abide by
Always love these interviews you have with Toyota engineers. Interesting what they have to say technically about why things were done a certain way.

David will it prolong the life of the turbo if you leave idle for 2 minutes before shutting the engine down?
